Digital Pour #1:
1988 Wild Turkey Twelve-year Beyond Duplication.
COLOR: mahogany. NOSE: deep/dusty with robust cookie and brown sugar, bright cellar funk, baker’s spice, old oak, mossy forest floor, with custard chew (Tripp’s 3rd favorite nose of all time). TASTE: bright bookstore candied pralines, big earth, balanced oak, brown sugar, mild pepper, low fruit, low peanut, mid-floral. FINSIH: clean, lingered viscous oil, baked brown sugar, mid-proofer, low heat, no decanter funk.
DECIPHERING TIPS: dark color with big nose mid-proofer (~100 pts) tells pre-2000 dusty. Low sweet, high earth, no butterscotch/maple excludes most National Distillers and Pre-Fire Heaven Hill. Dark color with mid-proof old texture excludes Four Roses. Low dark fruit cherry/vanilla but with aged brown sugar earth excludes Stitzel-Weller. Deep dark color with aged cookie profile (~15 years) excludes Bernheim. Age and complexity excludes Old Forrester DSP 414 which is similar but slightly more muted and less candied.
SUMMARY: Old-cellar funk profile with low sweet/fruit, mild pepper, brown sugar, and baker’s spice leans to Wild Turkey. Zero decanter funk excludes porcelain birds.
Nearly indecipherable profile would be wild turkey ‘80s CGF, ’93-94 Split Label, and Tribute Export.
NOTE: bottle variability, store conditions, leakage, and cork tightness creates subtle inconsistency in nearly every dusty profile including Wild Turkey.
ESSENTIAL EXPRESSION: ‘70s to early-‘90s era profile with deep aroma bomb, dark robust aged brown sugar with baker’s spice, cellar funk, pepper, mid-proof.
